Authentic Praises |
The more authentic the praise, the more genuine the encouragement.
One of the best tools I make the most of is authentic praise. Whenever I see good performance from my students, I praise them by telling them exactly why I liked their work. It is good when you tell them they are good students, but it is a different story when you specify what you praise them for. In fact, you can apply this to other life contexts, not only classrooms.
Here are some examples to clarify the point.
- Classrooms -
Instead of saying:
- You are a good student.
- You are an amazing student.
Say:
- You have good listening skills, and I like this about you.
- You have amazing speaking skills, and I hope you continue to improve yourself.
- You have a beautiful smile, and it makes the classroom more cheerful.
- Family, friends, and spouse -
- I like the way you have dealt with that problem, brother.
- I like the way you talked with your mother.
- I like how the salt was perfectly put in that dish.
- Real Story -
Last week, I asked three of my students to stay after our classes. They wondered why I asked them to do that, thinking they did something wrong, and I played on that 😁. Then, I praised them for their great personalities and way of speaking, and I told them that I feel happy when discussing something with them because their minds and ideas are amazing.
To sum it up, try to make your praises as specific as possible.
Praise to raise.
